Allow yourself to become terrified.
Portal will take you there.
Portal comes from another place.
This is Anthony Fantano's / The Needle Drop's review of Portal's 2013 album "Vexovoid," released via Profound Lore. It's a good review. He understands their sound, though he doesn't enjoy the crushing, pointed evil as much as I.
"Vexovoid" is new Portal. "Seepia" is old Portal. Fans like to complain that old Portal was better than new Portal. I'd counter that their complaints fall upon the dirt as dead air and are buried no sooner than they are philthily uttered, while Portal continues to evolve and writhe.
Portal albums are all different beasts, and should be judged on their own merits, not as comparisons to one another. I love everything Portal releases, because it's all consistent in theme and sound. The albums all impart their own day in the life of the Portal universe: an insane asylum full of the worst of fears.
The sound has to be muddy! It must remain incomprehensible to the sane!
Portal's human bodies reside in Australia, though inside they are timeless, spiritual beings.
Portal started in the nineties with The Curator and Horror Illogium. They added more members. Now they have four full-lengths, two EPs and two demos under their belt of olde wytch robe tatters.
The Portal Facebook Page is a good place to go.
The Portal Wikipedia Entry is a good place to go.
Cast of characters:
The Curator (vocals)
Horror Illogium (guitar)
Aphotic Mote (guitar)
Ignis Fatuus (drums)
Omenous Fugue (bass)
These members all played on Vexovoid, but the musicians on previous albums were different. The only members who have been in it from the beginning are The Curator and Horror Illogium. They're the core of Portal.
Horror Illogium has some great quotes on that Wikipedia page, defending his sound, eloquently and specifically, against critics who argue that it's too muddy.
Portal: Modern Metal that Doesn't Suck
Portal: Modern Metal that beautifully checks you in to the Asylum
